The color wrap starts as a small gob of molten glass, to which multiple colors - usually both opaque and transparent - are added. The wrap is heated to the consistency of honey, then literally wrapped around the piece to create that sweeping, blending movement of color you see. Since some of the colors will be transparent, the opaque background layer provides a pleasant glow rather than any harsh glare from the bulb.
